The Division of the Social Sciences (SSD) has the dual mission of advancing the understanding of social, cultural, and economic phenomena as well as educating the next generation of scholars and leaders. SSD faculty and students conduct research known for exceptional strength across fields and a broad range of methodology, from empirical and computational to qualitative and interpretive approaches. SSD offers doctoral degrees in 10 programs, masters degrees in four, and innovative opportunities for joint degrees. As the heart of a broad community of social scientists at the University of Chicago, SSD is central to rich networks of collaboration with other schools across the university, including partnerships in undergraduate programming, joint PhD programs, and robust collaborative research programs.
