Ujima Living-Learning Community (LLC) Overview
In collaboration with the Africana Studies program and the Black Cultural Center (BCC) at Virginia Tech, the Ujima Living-Learning Community (LLC) provides resources and support that enrich the Black student experience. The Ujima LLC focuses on cultural enrichment and academic excellence for students of all backgrounds to partake in programming and dialogue about Black identity, culture, and history. Students who live in the Ujima LLC benefit from being in an inviting and open space for the discussion of Black history, identity, and personal experiences.They receive academic support, access to campus resources designed to help them succeed, as well as networking opportunities with Black faculty, staff and alum. In addition, residents attend cultural excursions and field trips to further explore their identity and expand their horizons. Ujima LLC is located in Peddrew-Yates Hall. The building is named after Irving Linwood Peddrew III, the first black student to enroll at Virginia Tech in 1953, and Charlie Lee Yates, the first black graduate of Virginia Tech in 1958.
