USM's Uncrewed Maritime Systems Certificate Programs

The Uncrewed Maritime Systems (UMS) Certificate Programs were established at the request of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 Programs both compress four courses into a five-week long instructional period. The Tier 1 courses total ten credit hours and have been offered each year since 2017 while the Tier 2 courses total twelve credit hours and have been offered in 2021 and 2022. Successful completion of the Tier 1 Program is required for those wishing to apply for the Tier 2 Program. The five-week long Tier 1 classes will next be taught in the fall 2025 semester. Possible start dates are 29 September or 13 October. Classes are held every weekday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Marine Research Center located at the entrance to the Port of Gulfport, Mississippi. Application deadline is TBD. In the Tier 1 Program, students learn foundational material related to uncrewed undersea, surface, and aerial vehicles, gain an understanding of the environment in which the vehicles operate, and learn how the environment factors into decisions and mission planning. Topics also include electronics, materials, buoyancy and ballasting, sensors, navigation, and communications.
