“Early marriage is most prevalent in communities suffering deep, chronic poverty”. Helene D. Gayle Child marriage concerns me greatly, as I almost fell victim to child marriage in Uganda. I remember being scared of getting married at a very young age. Praying that my papers to go to the US would go through. I would not sleep or eat for days. I remember thinking about how my future was over, and I would never get an education. However, I have so many friends back home in child marriage. This is one of their stories: "I was supposed to be in school at the time I got married," Kemigisha, now 17. "I was 14 years old when I got married to a 37-year-old man. They said that the man would take care of me, my siblings, and my mother.” This marriage lasted 1 ½ years and she now is back in the refugee camp with her parents. unDEfeated is our organization, whose mission is to fight for these girls and give them hope, like someone who gave me hope and a chance for a better future. Someone has seen me and believed in me, and I believe these girls. I know with our support and resources that we can provide a chance for a better life.
