Under The Sun - Western Sahara Project

Welcome to Under The Sun's LinkedIn page! With many challenges including extreme poverty, lack of basic resources, and scorching heat, Under The Sun's mission is to support the plight of Saharawi people living in the refugee camps in Tindouf. It was founded in 2018 by Leila Belkacem and Iñigo Brenninkmeijer during their time at the United World College in Maastricht. Specifically, Under The Sun operates in 3 areas to support the most vulnerable among the community. Namely, providing (1) water tanks for safe storage of drinking water; (2) air-conditioning units for protection against extreme heat; and (3) building desert-weather-resistant dwellings. To date, the project has provided 24 air-conditioning units, 8 water tanks, and 10 weather-resistant dwellings. To do this, the team started by organising donation-based book sales, then ran physical and online fundraising campaigns, created a documentary about life in the camps (available on the website and YouTube), and raising awareness at different levels.
