About UNESCO-IICBA

The UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) is a Category I Institute established by the UNESCO General Conference in 1999. As the only UNESCO Institute in Africa, it envisions an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa where everyone has access to qualified, motivated and professional supported teachers. Its mission is to strengthen the capacities of Member States in Africa in teacher policy and development. The Institute’s main area of action is in Capacity Development, but it also works in the areas of Partnerships and Advocacy, and in Research and Development. Within these three areas, UNESCO-IICBA caters for cross-cutting issues, such as gender and information communication technology, and critical issues at all education levels, including early childhood care and education, primary and secondary education, technical and vocational education and training, higher education and non-formal education. UNESCO-IICBA’s vision and mission are in full alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Education 2030 Agenda, African Union Agenda 2063, and Continental Education Strategy for Africa 2016-2025 (CESA 16-25). UNESCO-IICBA coordinates the Teacher Development Cluster under the framework of CESA 16-25 and incorporates UNESCO’s Global Priority Africa and Global Priority Gender in its work.
