Founded in 1998 the Archaeology Society is one of the university’s most popular academic and educational societies with over 180 members. Focused on promoting interest in and passion for Archaeology and related subjects to both students and staff within and without the department of Archaeology.
To this end the society regularly hosts talks given by active researchers, professional field archaeologists and other industry professionals. Set in more relaxed settings these give ideas a chance to be explored by those that might have otherwise found them inaccessible. While the society is incredibly fortunate to be situated in the historic centre of the city of York, surrounded by much of the archaeology we regularly discuss, that has never kept us confined within its walls and the society has regularly run trips to places of historical significance both at home and abroad. With a wide variety of events on offer there is no better way to engage with Archaeology outside the classroom no matter what you study.
Given our longstanding collaborative relationship with the department of Archaeology you can often find us at open days, induction events and pretty much anything else hosted by the department, making sure that both new and existing students feel welcome both academically and socially at the university of York.
The society committee is elected annually by members and is a team of hard-working volunteers dedicated to providing the members with exceptional events and spreading awareness of the society.
