The idea of Upskill was conceived and brought to reality by six Kellogg 2012 graduate students graduates who wanted to make a mark in the education sector through impact investment. Upskill was initially formed as Upskill Capital with its focus being on impact investment and the idea behind the formation was: finding a way to sustainably make vocational (skills-based) education more accessible to the underprivileged youth in developing countries.
The founders of Upskill were in the search of a matrix through which skills education can be funded in a better way. After many discussions with industry stalwarts, they arrived at the root cause of the fund raising problem. It was concluded that there is an enormous opportunity for the VET sector to grow to meet the growing skills training need. However, with the current VET school capacity, only 50 million workers would receive the skills training by 2022, thus creating a skills gap of 450 million workers. Upskill aims to be the ‘missing link’ between the unemployed and unskilled youth and skill training leading to final job placement.
