U.P. State Legal Services Authority was constituted under section 6 of the Legal Services Authority Act 1987. Hon�ble the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court is Patron-in-Chief while Senior/Sitting Judge, Allahabad High Court is the Executive Chairman of the Authority.
High Court Legal Services Committee at Allahabad with its Sub Committee at High Court Lucknow Bench, 71 District Legal Services Authorities and 300 Tehsil Legal Services Committees have been constituted under the Act. District Judge is the Chiarman while a Judicial Officer of rank of Civil Judge (Senior Division) is Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority. Senior Civil Judge of the Tehsil is Ex-officio Chairman of Tehsil Legal Services Committee and Tehsildar is Secretary of Tehsil Legal Services Committee.
Authority was constituted to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.
Other objectives are to organize Lok Adalats to secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice on a basis of equal opportunity in a congenial atmosphere.
Award of the Lok Adalat is final and binding on all the parties to the dispute. No appeal lies against award.
Legal awareness and Legal Literacy Camps, Departmental Lok Adalats, Lok Adalats for Banks etc. are also organized under the Act.
Two Mediation Centres at High Court Allahabad and Lucknow are also established to settle disputes with the aid of mediators. Presently, the court annexed mediation centres have become functional in all the 71 Districts/Sessions Divisions of the State of Uttar Pradesh.
Symposiums, Seminars, Conferences are also organized in order to settle disputes as well as to make the people aware about legal system.
