UrbanTwin aims to develop and validate an integrated tool to support decision-makers in achieving strategic climate and energy goals such as the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050 and the vision of climate-adaptive “sponge cities” in Switzerland.
This tool will consist of two elements:
(a) a detailed multi-scale model of critical urban infrastructure, such as energy, water, buildings, and mobility, as well as underlying socio-economic and environmental drivers and their inter-dependencies.
(b) a large-scale IT infrastructure, including:
• a multi-sectoral data acquisition platform
• an energy-efficient server to run the UrbanTwin model
The developed tool aims to provide various stakeholders with tools to rationally consider the trade-offs for each scenario in a user-friendly and accessible manner while it will be modular so that it can be adapted to the various users’ needs.
It will serve planners at the urban or district level and grid operators to undertake evidence-based planning and operation of their assets as well as authorities from the regional to national level to assess the expected output of a decision towards the achievement of a specific target.
