About UR Medicine Motion Laboratories

The University of Rochester Medicine Motion Analysis Laboratories employ state-of-the-art biomechanical and neurophysiological technologies to objectively quantify Disability and Functional Outcome Measurements (DFOMs). These measures are used to assess the impact of both surgical and non-surgical interventions on patient function and quality of life, and to support the development of innovative rehabilitation strategies for individuals with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Under the leadership of Dr. Ram Haddas, the laboratories are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation engineers, orthopedic surgery residents, physical therapists, medical students, and data scientists. Together, the team conducts clinically driven research aimed at advancing patient-specific care through the integration of biomechanics, clinical data, and imaging. The laboratories encompass several specialized units, including traditional gait analysis, balance and fall risk assessment, virtual reality–based rehabilitation, injury prevention for tactical athletes, and wearable technology evaluation. Core technologies include electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), pressure mapping, force plates, and 3D motion capture systems. These tools are used in conjunction with clinical and radiographic data to inform individualized treatment planning and to support evidence-based recommendations for functional recovery and return-to-work timelines. In addition to research, the Motion Analysis Laboratories offer clinical services to the community, providing comprehensive functional evaluations that directly support medical decision-making and rehabilitation planning. Our goal is to bridge clinical care and research to improve patient outcomes and deliver meaningful impact across the continuum of musculoskeletal and neurological care.
