The Research Unit on Medicinal Plants within the Biotechnology Research Center, located in Laghouat, was established by Decree No. 629 dated November 5, 2020.
The unit focuses on the characterization, identification, and inventory of Algerian flora with high therapeutic or other potential. It also works on the extraction, purification, and characterization of bioactive compounds with significant therapeutic and parapharmaceutical value.
Additionally, the valorization of medicinal and aromatic plants through biotechnological methods is a key area of interest. The unit employs genetic diagnostic techniques (phytogeny) and gene sequencing to help preserve and understand Algeria’s rich plant heritage. It also includes the study of plant metabolic profiles to identify key biochemical markers linked to therapeutic activity.
Moreover, the unit is committed to advancing the fields of phytotherapy and aromatherapy in Algeria, along with conducting research and development in the area of homeopathic remedies.
