U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California

The United States Attorney's Office represents the federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the Eastern District of California (EDCA). This includes all criminal prosecutions for violations of federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the U.S. government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. EDCA is now the eighth most populous of the nation’s 94 federal judicial districts, encompassing 34 counties including six large urban areas — Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Vallejo, and Fairfield — and vast rural regions. It stretches from the Oregon border in the north to the Los Angeles border in the south, and from the Bay Area in the west to Nevada in the east. The Eastern District is 45 percent federal land. Within the Eastern District are the highest point in the continental United States — Mt. Whitney (14,494 feet above sea level) — and the lowest point — Death Valley (279 feet below sea level). The Eastern District’s 87,000 square miles are home to Yosemite, Mt. Lassen, Mt. Shasta, Lake Tahoe, and other national treasures. Serving more than 8 million residents, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has more than 100 attorneys and 80 support staff in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.
