Our name was inspired by the poem “和子由澠池懷舊” written by Su Shi (蘇軾) from the Song Dynasty: 人生到處知何似？應似飛鴻踏雪泥； 泥上偶然留指爪，鴻飛那復計東西。 老僧已死成新塔，壞壁無由見舊題； 往日崎嶇還記否？路長人困蹇驢嘶。 Su Shi describes life as “snowy muddy claw”, which means life is like leaving footprints that is full of impermanence and uncertainties. Claw-prints on snow are shallow and small; those that are on mud are even easier to be washed away. Studying abroad could be a challenging journey. The last line of the poem translates to “Do you still remember the days we went through the mountainous path (for exams)? It was a very long way, exhausting, and the donkeys cried.” The effort that we put into learning is a footprint that cannot be forgotten. To record the path taken by Chinese students, we named the University of Toronto’s first Chinese student publication as “Footprint”. Footprint Publication is led by our President, along with the Editorial Department, Public Relations Department, Finance Department, and Production Department. Editorial Department is responsible for writing and reviewing publications; Public Relations Department is responsible for distributing publications, contacting members and organizing events; Finance Department is responsible for financial management and sponsorship; Production Department is responsible for designing publications and posters.
