The Asian American Advocacy Project

In December 2020, a passionate group of Vanderbilt students came together to advocate for the creation of an Asian American Studies major and minor. To apply institutional pressure, students contacted Asian American alumni to provide support for the initiative. Alumni expressed great interest in supporting students and believed that there was much more work for Asian American representation at Vanderbilt. After that meeting, our Co-founders, Rohit Kataria and Angela Yan, created The Asian American Advocacy Project (TAAAP). At TAAAP, we believe that creating structural change at Vanderbilt is imperative to the creation of an inclusive academic and social community for Asian American students. Our hope is that we can foster an environment where students of all Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) backgrounds feel as celebrated as possible. Beyond structural advocacy on campus, TAAAP forges local and national partnerships to expand its influence into the greater Nashville and Middle TN area, with the goal of establishing meaningful connections to community members and fostering the next generation of APIDA advocates.
