Created in 2004, Velocity Networks Ltd operated the first open access fibre optic network in Hamilton. The underlying network asset was a collaboration between Velocity shareholders, Hamilton City Council, Wintec, Waikato Regional Council and University of Waikato. Collectively the parties were allocated several $Million to expand the network with an initial (successfully implemented) strategy of connecting the priority MUSH users, being municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals, and also expanding to connect business users and anyone who had high speed connectivity requirements.
The Velocity network acheived Deloitte Fast50 placings two years in a row and won it's category for small business opertion in the Waikato Business Awards prior to being bought by WEL Networks in 2011. WEL was successful in its bid to launch Ultrafast Fibre in the Waikato, BoP and Taranaki regions. Ultrafast was then on-sold and rebranded to today's successful Tuatahi First Fibre.
