Visual Ergonomics is how you design the visual environment to enable vision.
Some of the most common problems with indoor lighting is glare, insufficient illuminance and flicker/TLM. This effects our performance and wellbeing, can cause eyestrain, headache and musculoskeletal strain. VERAM is a visual ergonomics risk assessment method that can help companies evaluate the visual environment and create a better, healthier and more productive visual working environment.
When you strain your eyes and experience eyestrain (asthenopia, computer vision syndrome) of some sort the muscle activity of the upper back, shoulders and neck increases. This in turn can lead to pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. This can affect the wellbeing and reduce the performance levels.
There are several factors in the visual environment that can have an impact on our visual ability. The luminaire is often misplaced in relation to the work task, causing glare and making it harder for the eyes to focus. When the eyes have to strain to maintain focus, the muscle activity in your upper back, neck and shoulders increases, causing neck pain and/or headache etc. When the illuminance is too high or too low there is also an increase of eyestrain and headache, affecting our performance levels. When there is flicker or TLM (Temporal Light Modulation) from the luminaires the risk for headache and/or migraine increases. When the computer screen/s are mounted too high the risk for eyestrain increases.
All of these factors can often easily be improved and can increase wellbeing and productivity among the staff.
An education in VERAM is about to be launched so that more people can work with the visual environment. So far the education only exist in Swedish and about 100 persons from the OHS, Occupational Health Services, have participated. They experience the education and method to be valuable knowledge and a tool to assess the risks and increase wellness and performance.
