Initially founded in 2004 as an Academic Research Centre of Excellence on military land-system electronic architectures, conducting fundamental research activities funded by UK MOD / DSTL. From 2019 onwards it branched into two independent companies, the VRCEU focusing on European Commission, European Defence Agency, and other EU defence research activities, and the VRCUK focusing on UK defence and security activities.
