With over 200,000 Veterans transitioning out annually, only 8.2% enroll in and complete STEM degrees. VETS | STEM provides a five-star general solution to increase the number of Veterans enrolling in and completing STEM degrees. Our five-star-general solution includes: A mentorship program designed to help Veterans (mentees) match their aspirations with mentors within fields of interest. Mentors would be trained to understand and meet student Veterans’ needs during their transition process and to identify STEM skill sets. Mentees will meet with trained mentors to maximize Veteran experience and skills to advance in STEM fields. Free psychological, professional, and academic counseling services: Tutoring for STEM-based academic and professional topics. Classes on foundational concepts for college readiness assessments to place out of remedial courses for those whose service experience meets the courses’ requirements. Access to licensed therapists via Headstrong. Establish partnerships with other Veteran organizations to help Student Veterans construct a professional curriculum vitae/resume, and find local employment opportunities. Collaborate with companies and government agencies at the local, state, federal, and global levels to increase Veteran interest in STEM degrees and occupations through community and networking events, in addition to career and internship opportunities. Provide scholarships for Veterans to offset direct and indirect costs of attending STEM-based programs. Create entrepreneurial opportunities for Veterans to become academic STEM tutors for K12 for the local communities in which they reside. Work with colleges and universities to train their faculty to meet the Veteran population for a higher graduation success rate.
