The Swiss company VHF-Technologies SA, better known under the brand name Flexcell, was founded in 2000 at the Ecole d’Ingénieurs du Canton de Neuchâtel in Le Locle.
The aim was to create an industrial process for a technique for applying amorphous silicon by very high frequency (VHF) plasma blasting, developed at the Institute of Microtechnology (IMT) of the University of Neuchâtel.
Flexcell's unique technology makes it possible to use a thin, flexible plastic substrate instead of glass. In comparison with the production of traditional crystalline modules, the technology requires 300 times less raw materials, resulting in high production volumes and low energy consumption.
Within the space of a few years, VHF-Technologies SA has developed into a high-tech photovoltaics company. In 2007, Flexcell became part of the German Q-Cells AG group, a manufacturer of highly efficient solar cells made of monoand multicrystalline silicon.
Following the completion of its new production facility with an annual capacity of 25MW, Flexcell is now focusing on the commercialisation of solar modules designed for integration in building components.
Commercial and industrial buildings with large roof areas
constitute an important customer segment for Flexcell.
This type of roof requires a lightweight photovoltaic system which can be easily installed and integrated in the building.
Flexcell is working in partnership with manufacturers from the building industry to develop new photovoltaic products for lamination onto various substrates.
Since its establishment, Flexcell has also been developing and marketing flexible, rollable and portable solar chargers, specially designed for outdoor activities such as camping, sailing and other sports.
Flexcell also manufactures customised solar modules for integration in design products such as solar bags, or for system integration.
