The health cost of bad indoor air quality (AQ) is immense. Respiratory disease affects one in five people. It is the third biggest cause of death in England. More than 1 billion people globally suffer from either acute or chronic respiratory conditions. It kills 4 million people prematurely, infants and young children being very susceptible.
Productivity is significantly reduced by poor AQ. 34 million work days are lost yearly in the UK mainly due to poor AQ in buildings. The work rate also falls when the AQ is poor in offices. Improving the AQ improves productivity in both cases.
Poor AQ in classrooms causes Children in perform 30% worse in tests. Levelling this up requires removing 7 children from the class, or adding an extra teacher. This would require a big increase in the cost of education.
