About Wakefield Pride
"Wakefield Pride" emerged in 2005 as a response to a request from the youth group 'Fruitbowl' to organise an LGBT+ Pride event in Wakefield. Initially known as 'Wakefield Pride not Prejudice,' its foundation was laid on the back of a beer mat in 'The Rainbow' Public House. The initiative, fueled by dedicated volunteers, collaborated with various entities like 'Wakefield Council,' 'Primary Care Trusts,' 'West Yorkshire Police Authority,' 'VOX,' MESMAC, and the local LGBT+ community. The first Pride event in 2005 marked a significant success, with around 2000 attendees. Over the years, 'Wakefield Pride' grew, gaining charitable status and receiving accolades, including a Royal honor and the title of "Best LGBT Community Pride Event - West Yorkshire" in 2023. Despite logistical changes in event locations, the essence of the movement endures, championing diversity and unity. Embracing a formal constitution and committed to hosting an annual Pride event every second Sunday in August, 'Wakefield Pride' remains unwavering since 2005. Join the journey of diversity and community-building as 'Wakefield Pride' continues breaking barriers and strengthening the bonds that make Wakefield prouder.
