WalNUT aims to develop the necessary concepts and technological solutions to re-design the value and supply chains of nutrients from waste water (WW) and brine, thus closing the loop of nutrients in the WW system shifting the approach from removal to recovery (in line with the objectives of the EIP on Agrifood and Raw Materials).
The project will develop, assess and test 5 new integrated and sustainable technological solutions for highly efficient and effective nutrients recovery from 5 WW streams (urban, industrial, food, sewage sludge, brine from water desalination and demineralisation plants). A wide range of technological processes (physico-chemical, electro-chemical, biological) will be monitored and validated in labscale, targeting not only nutrient recovery efficiency but also the minimization of environmental impact.
WalNUT will therefore create and disseminate a new paradigm shift from WW and brine treatment to resource recovery, which is essential for EU to sustain industries and societies for the long-term.
