Reducing water wastage during geyser replacements and maintenance through innovation. In light of the chronic water shortage issue in South Africa, it is troubling that plumbers who work with water on a daily basis, and should be helping save water, discard vast quantities of water when replacing geysers and undertaking general geyser maintenance. We have designed, patented and locally manufactured a product which nullifies water wastage during geyser replacements and geyser maintenance, with the potential of saving countless litres of water annually. It should be our ethical duty as plumbers to utilize this simple, extremely affordable solution. As plumbers, the Wattapac team regularly do geyser replacements and maintenance work on geysers. It is often necessary to drain the hot water from the geyser. This can be anything from 150 litres to 300 litres of water depending on the geyser size, and all this water is wasted. Once replacement or maintenance is completed, the geyser is normally filled up again using fresh water. Using the Wattapac, water can be pumped back into the geyser thus saving water, time and electricity. The product is especially beneficial for households where Aqualock water meters have been installed to restrict water usage. The Wattapac reinforced PVC bag (or bladder) is locally manufactured, with pump rotation and durable welded seams that can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C and six-bar pressure. All fittings and attachments have been used in the plumbing industry for years. Once attached, the bladder allows the geyser to drain and refill, thereby reusing the water from the geyser instead of it being discarded. Draining and refilling the geyser can be done in about 30 minutes, this can drastically reduce labour time as draining a geyser in some instances can take up to 2 hours.
