I admit I’m conservative, especially when it comes to security. I have a background as a UNIX systems administrator and IT consultant working for universities, government, IBM and Telstra. With such important systems on the line, we didn’t take any risks.
After 30 years in the tech industry I’ve seen people lose their novels in progress and the entire contents of their hard drives. I’ve seen websites hacked, defaced, broken, slowed to a standstill by thousands of attacks per hour, infected with Malware, and email address lists spammed. And it’s only getting worse. In fact we now have a 2 in 3 chance of having our personal data hacked!
Websites are now being hijacked, encrypted, and the owners held to ransom for tens of thousands of dollars.
Just one website breach could damage your reputation with spam or rogue content.
That’s why I take security seriously – and so should you.
In fact, I’m obsessive about it. I don’t just rely on one level of website security – I use every safety method I can. You can run the best firewall in the world, but there’ll always be a time lag between the discovery of a website vulnerability and the release of a firewall update or patch that blocks it. So I use many layers of security, for example:
- Secure hosting
- Locking down file permissions
- Firewalls on my server and each website
- Two separate off-site backup locations, each containing daily, weekly and monthly backups.
- Anti-spam
- Monitoring logs
- Content delivery networks
- SSL security certificates
- Password managers
