The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) community in the U.S. includes over 5 million adults— a large and growing demographic that often faces unnecessary challenges in public spaces. For individuals with ASD, places like museums, libraries, restaurants, travel destinations, and offices can present overwhelming obstacles. Sensory elements such as bright lighting, unpredictable sounds, and visual noise make these environments stressful, limiting engagement and participation. Despite ADA regulations that support accessibility for visible disabilities, neurodiversity is often overlooked, leaving individuals on the autism spectrum underserved and excluded from many public and professional settings. The ASD community faces unique challenges in community environments, including chaotic spaces, overwhelming sights and sounds, unclear expectations, and unpredictable interactions. For many, these barriers often make staying home the preferred option. However, these challenges can be addressed with thoughtful planning and appropriate support. This is where Welcoming Spaces comes in. Welcoming Spaces aims to make community environments more accessible, enjoyable, and engaging for people with autism. We collaborate with families and community-based organizations—such as museums, libraries, childcare centers, schools, and universities —to provide autism-specific training, assess sensory needs, design supportive spaces, and create tools that promote ease and enjoyment in public settings. Together, we can bridge gaps, increase understanding, and build inclusive environments, fostering a world where individuals with ASD and neurodivergent identities feel fully recognized, supported, and warmly welcomed.
