Westgate Community Trust (Canterbury) Ltd, a charitable company, has been a local success story since its conception in 2010 – offering an alternative to Canterbury City Council’s plans to demolish Westgate Hall to create a car park – through to its status today as a major event provider with a healthy financial position. The Trust holds a 99-year lease to the Hall from the Council since 2014. Built by public subscription, the Hall opened its doors as a drill hall for the Territorial Army in 1913 and has been a community venue ever since. Refurbishment has restored the Hall’s Edwardian features and incorporated 21st century green technology. With a new lease of life the Trust has managed the Hall’s transition to a vibrant community space, hosting a wide variety of events. It now has a footfall of over 45,000 per year. However the Hall’s remit is not limited to its immediate community. The Trust’s mission is to serve the community of Canterbury and its districts in its broadest most inclusive sense. Located in the heart of the city, a short walk from both railway stations, the Hall is the ideal location for a regional event.
