#WeTooCriticalMass is a social movement, inspired by the #MeToo movement that swept the world last decade. Our movement represents two urgent and related calls to action: (1) growing demand for clean, safe and reliable nuclear energy; and (2) the increasing demand for a diverse nuclear workforce that is welcoming to and representative of societies and populations across the globe.
The concept of “critical mass” was first used to describe a phenomenon in nuclear physics. Ubiquitous in the nuclear industry, the term refers to the minimum amount of a fissionable material that will support a self-sustaining chain reaction. At this mass, the neutrons released in one fission reaction can trigger adjacent atoms to fission. British science historian Margaret Gowing is credited with coining the term around 1940.
“Critical mass” also is used to explain socio-dynamic phenomena that drive actions and behaviors of large segments of the population. Also described as “critical density” in ecology, “threshold models of collective behavior” in sociology, and inflection points for policy influence in gender politics, the term illustrates how a spark ignites social movement.
In 2016 Susan Fowler, then a software engineer at Uber, sparked a conversation that ignited social movement after she encountered sex discrimination, reported it, and suffered retaliation. Uber threw away her talent. On February 19, 2017, Fowler turned whistleblower in a courageous blog post that went viral, launching the #MeToo movement.
This decade brings a new social movement and growing demand for clean, reliable and safe energy. The solution is nuclear. A trained and skilled workforce is needed to deliver this solution. However, today’s workforce comprises a large retirement-eligible demographic.
The nuclear future cannot afford to discourage, exclude and lose talent. Women in STEM fields and skilled trades will be vitally important for humankind to realize nuclear solutions to pressing challenges.
