Wheelwright Associates takes its name from the practice of building, truing and balancing wheels. The metaphor is an apt one for interdependence; individuals, teams, companies all must work together just as the parts of a wheel do to provide a stable and reliable method of traveling toward shared goals and destinations. From the hub, through the spokes, to the outer rim, the wheel is a a system of interrelated parts working together in a balanced fashion. The wheelwright insures that the balance is kept between parts and the whole, achieving a 'true' roll. And the wheel is also a symbol of wholeness, or completeness. In this regard, our practice begins with helping individuals at all levels of the organization to better understand themselves and their working relationships. As a component of leadership development, this self-understanding is the hub of interactions with co-workers and clients. Without a strong hub, the spokes and the rim—teams and the organization at large—will not operate as smoothly and effectively as possible, making the journey difficult, and sometimes ending it prematurely. We work mostly with smaller, younger companies who are committed to making their journeys successful, and insuring the leadership capability that can weather whatever the trail has to offer.
