I've been where my clients are.
We’ve all met people that have never struggled with their weight or have no issues with choosing the right foods. They don’t overeat, they’re not emotional eaters…they have a great relationship with food. Well, I wasn’t one of those people. Whenever I was faced with any type of stress, I turned to food. It became my go-to source of comfort.
I did not deal well with stress and suffered from anxiety. Food, technically, was NOT my issue. My use of food as a coping mechanism was my issue. I “tasted” things, here and there. I boosted my moods with sweets. My “tools” were normally baked goods. To combat these habits, I worked out extra hard at the gym and took a kick boxing class to burn extra calories. In the end, I continued to put on weight.
I was devastated…not because of the weight itself, but because I felt hopeless. I was at a point where I had completely lost control of my eating. I prayed about it because I knew that it was beyond me.
My story is also one of overcoming fear, anxiety, overthinking, anger, self-doubt, underachieving and a victim mentality to become someone that strives for emotional, spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing ....
It is also about helping others to move toward healing and overcoming in their own lives.
While in the Army, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, I worked as a member of team that included occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychiatry, orthopedics, and prosthetics.
My patients were amputees that had been evacuated from the war. Due to the nature of their injuries, there issues of stress, anxiety, fighting negative thoughts and developing a belief in their ability to adapt to their new life.
Whether a patient or a client, the realm of health and fitness are dependent on psychological components such as our thoughts, habits, behaviors, in addition to our physical and physiological wellbeing.
