The ANU Women* in STEM Leadership Conference is a three day conference aimed at female, femme-aligned, and non-binary identifying undergraduate students. The conference aims to establish a Women* in STEM community, foster leadership skills among students, and enhance their networking abilities. The conference will take place from the 31st of March to the 2nd of April at the ANU (venue TBC) and we hope to extend the opportunity to 75 attendees.
The purpose of this conference is to provide undergraduate female, femme-aligned and non-binary STEM students at the ANU the opportunity to network with one another and STEM professionals, improve their leadership skills and connect with others in the community in a safe and supportive environment. The conference also invites students to voice their experiences in STEM, connect with other students and gain advice on pathways in STEM. A 2023 report by the Australian Government found that women make up 37% of enrolments in university STEM courses, and just 17% of VET STEM enrolments. Moreover, only 15% of STEM-qualified jobs are held by women. It is also noted that there are few statistics considering non-binary people, because of “small numbers and data availability” (STEM Equity Monitor - Data Highlights, 2021). We believe this further highlights the importance of ensuring that this event is accessible and welcoming to non-binary identifying students. In the interest of inclusion we do not charge attendees, and extend the conference as an opportunity created by the ANU Women* in STEM Leadership Conference and our partners.
We believe that engaging female, femme-aligned and non-binary students early on in their STEM career can aid in developing the skills, confidence and community that is required to ensure higher retention rates of these underrepresented groups in STEM.
