Wona Collective

Wona is a women-led arts collective, media production company, and creative hub based in Lilongwe, Malawi. The collective uses art and media to shed light on the lived experiences of African women and marginalised groups. ‘Wona’ means ‘see’ in Chichewa, because, above everything else, that is the collective’s main goal, to make people see; to make people see artists and their talents; to use art to make people see the stories of the women and to make all artists see the potential they hold. Our Vision: •To have more documented stories of Malawians created by Malawians, particularly stories that are often erased or left untold: the stories of women and marginalised groups. Our Mission: •To collaborate with artists from a variety of fields and mediums in order to create socially impactful content that represents women and marginalised groups. •To develop communications materials for clients that develop diverse and socially impactful programs - particularly programs that focus on improving the lives of women and marginalised groups. •To develop communications that ensure that organisations’ programs, policies, and processes are rooted in context and therefore not only efficient but sustainable. •To create and curate spaces conducive to artistic collaboration and innovative problem-solving.
