Established in 1989, Wrexham Mineral Cables developed a totally new and unique process for the continuous manufacture of Mineral Insulated Copper Cables. Mineral Insulated Copper Cables are used to provide circuit integrity for power and control circuits of safety critical equipment in such applications as; Oil and Gas, Hazardous areas Security, Car Parking Multi-storey & Underground Hospitals Care homes Moving Walkways / Travellators/Escalators Metro-links Hotels Power Generation & Distribution Petrol Stations Railway Tunnels/Stations Road Tunnels & Mines, Shopping Centres Education Buildings Petrochemicals Airports Public Buildings including Theatres, Libraries & Cinemas Transport/Interchanges Mineral Insulated Copper Cable is totally inorganic & Silicone free in construction. The main construction consists of solid copper conductors (cores), highly compressed magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation and a solid copper sheath. This unique construction gives melting points of 1083 degrees C (Copper) & 2800 degrees C (MgO). This provides fire survival whilst continuing to carry load for 3 hours @ 950 degrees C and for short periods of time in excess of 1000 degrees C. Mineral Insulated Copper Cables are considered non-ageing as copper and MgO will not deteriorate with age in most situations. Polymeric Cables normally may be replaced as the polymers used for insulation breakdown causing the insulation resistance (IR) to fall this creating an unsafe system.
