Zanrec is a professional waste management company with over 10 years of waste management experience. We are based in Stone Town on Zanzibar, in Tanzania. In cooperation with the local government and communities of Zanzibar, Zanrec has developed a full-scale system that collects and recycles waste. Zanrec was founded in 2009 by two social entrepreneurs, Erik Gulbrandsen and Fredrik Alfredsson, and The Rylander Foundation. The team has previous experience from developing unique waste management solutions in different parts of the world. Zanrec aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of Zanzibar. We reduce pollution through controlled waste management. This ensures that the growing tourism economy becomes even more sustainable and that an increasing number of people can earn an income from waste-related business opportunities. Zanrec’s vision is to lead the constant evoluation of a greener and more environmentally friendly Zanzibar through a model that is replicable to other small island states. Together with our clients, Zanrec’s mission is to create a sustainable economy around waste that can ensure a clean, green and prosperous Zanzibar.
