Zimele (independence in Xhosa) was founded in 2020 by Dr Sarah Whitehead; a medical doctor with a PhD in health sciences education, Jayson Chin; an orthotist and prosthetist and Rodney Lakay; a businessman and bilateral amputee. Zimele’s interdisciplinary team of health professionals will provide prosthetic fitting and physical and psychological rehabilitation services for amputees from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and will aid in their societal integration through access to skills training and work opportunities – we aim to meet the SDG Good health and well-being by increasing accessibility to prosthetic rehabilitation.
