Zinester.org is a two man consulting team whose mission is to give those in digital and educational black spots the tools they needed to create and publish their own printed DIY magazines (ZINES) www.zinester.org http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36202074 Zinester.org aims to empower those who are, in the words of Arundathi Roy, either ‘the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.” Zinester.org’s pilot project in Kibera slum in Nairobi in 2015 was a success that attracted worldwide media attention. The sale of the 'Chocolate City Zine' via Kickstarter proved that there is high demand for Zines made by marginalized groups with key influencers in Australia, Europe and the USA. Zinester is now preparing for two workshops with Youth In Action. The first in Amhara, Ethiopia and the second in Cairo, Egypt. In Ethiopia Zinester will deliver a workshop with girls focusing on migration and livelihoods to both create a zine from girls’ perspective and surface themes for further formative research. Insights from this coupled with a short ethnographic film will inform the way in which financial literacy and entrepreneurship are taught via the existing program. In Egypt, zinester will train mentors how to set up Zines with groups of young disadvantaged people. zinester will produce a short film exploring the lives of two young Zine makers as they make a Zine focused upon the lives of those who are being innovative and entrepreneurial in their community.
