Компания была основана в 1994 году как поставщик парфюмерии, косметики и товаров бытовой химии, к освоению продовольственного сегмента рынка приступила в 1997, а уже в 2001 году стала крупнейшей в России по количеству магазинов. Сегодня "Магнит" - это национальная розничная сеть: более 6000 универсамов "Магнит", около 700 магазинов "Магнит-Косметик", 126 гипермаркетов, расположенных в около 1605 населенных пунктах. Более 50 субъектов Российской Федерации, 18 распределительных центров и 18 автотранспортных предприятий.
В 2012 году компания планирует открыть более 60 магазинов формата гипермаркет и Магнит "Семейный", более 1100 магазинов "у дома", 250 магазинов косметики, 4 распределительных центра и 4 автотранспортных предприятия.
