The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP / 自由民主党) is Japan’s leading conservative political party. Established in 1955 through the merger of two center-right parties, we have played a central role in shaping Japan’s postwar democracy, economic growth, and international policy. We advocate for pro-business policies, national security, and strong international alliances, particularly with the United States. We have governed Japan for the majority of the time since our foundation, except for brief periods between 1993–1996 and 2009–2012. Headquartered in Nagatacho, Tokyo, we are comprised of elected members of the National Diet and supported by a nationwide network of local chapters.
