Yet, something important is missing. According to statistics, we spend 90% of our time indoors. Children today spend half the time their parents did playing outside. Chemical products are increasingly replacing natural materials found in wood, metal, and leather. Over the past fifty years, the chemicals production in the world has increased more than fifty times and many of the products we use every day contain and emit chemicals, some causing problems such as allergies and others having unknown long-term effects. Our ancestors lived in a world where most human needs were met through wood, metals, and other resources that were extracted from the natural environment. Today, we live in a very different world, where nearly everything in a typical room is in some way derived from industrial chemicals. We are losing something that has been with us for thousands of years of our human history. Something that is intergral to our very human existence. Our connection to the natural world around us.
