Baby Rhino Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to saving rhinos from extinction. Baby Rhino Rescue’s primary mission is to support sanctuaries in Africa that secure and care for baby rhinos orphaned due to the poaching crisis. The ultimate goal is to keep these orphans safe until they are independent and then reintroduce them into safe, natural environments in genetically diverse herds, hopefully assuring future generations of this iconic species. Baby Rhino Rescue uses a global platform to fulfill its mission statement — “Working together to save rhinos from extinction!” Baby Rhino Rescue partners with stakeholders all over the world to support sanctuaries and projects in South Africa, which has the world’s remaining concentration of rhinos, as well as in other countries, to secure the future of orphaned baby rhinos. As the rhino is a keystone species — remove the keystone and the arch collapses — saving the rhino from extinction is more than a moral imperative. The rhino is an essential part of the African ecosystem. Because of its unique grazing habits, the loss of the rhino would devastate entire ecosystems, impacting every creature, including humans. The protection of the rhino is an important sustainability issue: its extinction, tragic as it is, also threatens the flora and fauna of the African grasslands and savannas. In addition, rhinos are an important part of South African ecotourism, which provides many local communities with income to survive and thrive. A growing number of nations — most notably, Botswana — and some local communities, understand the importance of this keystone species to their livelihoods. But even in areas where they are keenly aware of the harmful consequences of poaching, too many communities lack the resources to tackle the issue, protect their environments, stop poachers, and secure the safety of rhinos and other iconic species.
