In January 2009, a coalition of individuals from twenty public and private organizations across Barron County came together to address the growing issue of rural homelessness. Recognizing the devastating impact of homelessness on health and well-being, they worked collectively to create a comprehensive service delivery system to provide for basic needs and help individuals achieve stability. This effort gave rise to the idea of an emergency shelter in the region.
In 2011, Benjamin’s House Emergency Shelter opened its doors, becoming the only homeless shelter within an hour’s radius. Since then, we have provided a safe haven, vital services, and support to individuals and families facing homelessness in Barron County and beyond.
Our shelter features 19 resident rooms, which vary in capacity and can house between 1 to 5 individuals per room. In addition, we offer 5 Continued Care Housing Program (CCHP) units, providing transitional housing support. Through these services, we not only offer immediate shelter but also comprehensive case management and goal-oriented programs to help residents transition to self-sufficiency.
Over the years, Benjamin’s House has provided more than 82,000 shelter bed nights and served 1,583 individuals, including 337 families and 61 veterans.
This year alone, from January through July, we have already provided over 5,000 shelter bed nights, serving 141 individuals—103 adults, 26 children, and 23 veterans. Each client stay costs us an estimated $55 per day, and as we continue to operate at full capacity, the need for community support is more urgent than ever.
In response to the growing demand, we’ve expanded our housing units this year and are actively exploring further expansion to serve even more people in need.
Benjamin’s House is 100% supported by fundraising, donations, and grants. Together with the help of our community, we continue to offer hope, stability, and a path to permanent housing for those who need it most. Thank you.
