HAICu is a project to access, link and analyse digital heritage collections using artificial intelligence.
In the HAICu project, researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital humanities, heritage experts, journalists and engaged citizens work together. The first goal is to connect various digital heritage collections and make them “multimodal”. This means combining the different cultural heritage media – imagery, video, audio, text and museum objects – together. Subsequently, it is important to analyze and contextualize our cultural heritage material, so that we can understand it today and in the future.
The challenges of cultural heritage, such as its diverse and context dependent nature, offer a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of what AI can do. In order to make new AI technologies useful outside of the lab, they must be able to learn from as few examples as possible (small datasets) and continue to learn from its users. In this, HAICu pays special attention to ensuring that the methods underlying its technological developments are responsible and explainable.
