In Kamp Amersfoort werden tijdens de oorlog meer dan 35.000 Nederlanders vastgezet. In de omgeving van het kamp, dat berucht was vanwege de honger en de terreur die er heersten, werden meer dan driehonderd gevangenen, veelal verzetsmensen, gefusilleerd. De nazi's voerden tienduizenden gevangenen door naar kampen in Duitsland, waar velen alsnog om het leven kwamen.
Op de plek van het kamp is een bezoekerscentrum opgericht. De komende jaren vindt een grondige uitbreiding plaats met steun van o.a. het Nationaal Fonds voor Vrede, Vrijheid en Veteranenzorg (vfonds). Kamp Amersfoort kan zich hierdoor met tentoonstellingen en programma’s ontwikkelen tot centrum voor educatie op het gebied van gevangenschap tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
