In 2009, Storm Trentham introduced the sport of lacrosse to Kenya. Why sport? Because the power of sport produces positive results that no direct funding can achieve. Every penny, every material good donated has gone straight to those who needed it the most. Initially, many came to training simply because they got food and water that day, it was the instinct to survive that motivated these potential athletes. Initially, the sport concentrated on young women, due to the lack of sporting activity available to this section of the community.
Kenya Lacrosse now provides training for approx 400 students, the majority from disadvantaged backgrounds, across 14 schools and an academy in Nairobi, attracting volunteer coaches from all over the world.
Storm Trentham, the Founder and Head Coach of Kenya Lacrosse, likes to make dreams a reality. She is a highly regarded international player, coach and manager with 13 years of experience and a wealth of accolades. In 2015, whilst at the closing ceremony for the Women’s Lacrosse Under 19 World Championship, she made the decision to dream really big. She was going to put together the first female African national lacrosse team and take them to the World Championships in Canada by 2019.
AUGUST 2019 - KENYAN U19 LACROSSE TEAM ACHIEVE A WORLD FIRST BY BEING THE ONLY WOMEN’S AFRICAN TEAM TO EVER COMPETE AT A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN CANADA AUGUST 2019.
Team Kenya finished 18th with 3 wins, 4 most valuable players, Kenyan player no 13 overall point scorer (1st non-american player), 3 players approached by USA college coaches.
Team Kenya brings the Lacrosse world a major step closer to achieving Olympic status. In order to become an Olympic sport, it must be played on all continents. Africa was the final hurdle.
Next chapter – Kenya Boys to the U19 World Championship 2020. Kenya Girls Senior World Championship 2021.
