Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) was founded in 1825, modelled on the École polytechnique in Paris, as the first Polytechnikum and later technical university in Germany and the fourth in Europe (after l'X, TU Graz, and TU Vienna). It influenced the foundings of other technical universities, such as ETH Zurich and MIT.
KIT is a member of TU9 and a part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative in 2006 and 2019.
Its alumni include 6 Nobel Prize laureates and 10 Leibniz Prize winners, along with many other successful people.
