Ocean climate observations, to be sustainable, must be an integral part of a multipurpose and integrated ocean observing system. Physical ocean climate observations are needed to deliver information and products to operational services (for instance, weather services, warning systems etc). The provided information is the baseline for drafting ocean state and climate assessments. To be able to deliver ocean forecasts and early warnings, climate projections and assessments and protect ocean health and its benefits, it is vital to measure Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) and Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). These variables form the basis of the Global Climate Indicators that contain key information for the most relevant areas of climate change. Ocean observations are implemented and funded by nations according to their national interests and needs but in line with European and international agreements and guidelines.
ObsSea4Clim will improve the sustainable and multi-purpose observations essential for European and global climate needs; provide an improved observing framework based on Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs)/Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) embedded in a Rolling Review of Requirements approach; provide projections and actionable indicators for sustainable development provided.
The work is organized around four building blocks: 1- the definition of the Essential Ocean Variables and Essential Climate Variables (EOV/ECV) Framework; 2- the definition of EOV/ECV-based Ocean Climate Indicators; 3- the application of the EOV/ECV in six Application Areas; 4- the improvement of projections and performance of Earth System Models; 5 - Making ObsSea4Clim science and innovation actionable by integrating its results in European and global initiatives. ObsSea4Clim will also link to the Mission Restore our Ocean 2030 lighthouse basins. AI methods will be used for data quality control and to unlock EOV/ECVs from existing data repositories.
