Production mechanization came of the first industrial revolution using water, steam power and cotton gin. The previous revolutions started in 1784 used water and steam power to mechanize production, brought about the golden age of mass production by using electricity and progress in transportation, led to form supply chain thinking, introduced outstanding achievements in different science e.g. computer, electronics and information technology resulted in automated production. Apart from different categories considered for these revolutions (e.g. three by Klaus Schwab or four by Jim Kellso) a new industrial revolution has started (fourth or fifth) erected on digitalization (or digital revolution). This revolution has enhanced the life quality, increased the life expectancy and boosted societal wellbeing through innovation, new technologies and new value creation potential. It covers a wide-range of fields including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, the internet of things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, energy storage and quantum computing. Today people are observing profound shifts across all industries, characterized by the emergence of new business models, the disruption of incumbents and the reforming of production, consumption, transportation and delivery systems. On the societal front, a paradigm shift is occurring in the way we work and communicate, express, inform and entertain ourselves.
