SmartDose is a nonprofit startup creating a smart pill bottle that tracks medication doses and sends alerts to help people take their medications correctly. Medication non-adherence is a widespread issue, especially among seniors and individuals with chronic conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. Missed or incorrect doses can lead to serious health complications, hospitalizations, and even death. Nearly 50% of people with chronic illnesses do not take their medications as prescribed due to lack of assistance and accessibility (CDC). Caregivers often don’t know if doses are missed until it’s too late. For seniors, especially those with memory loss or complex conditions, this gap can lead to avoidable health risks—and emotional strain for families. Our product is currently under Provisional Patent and Patent Pending. Traditional pill bottles lack tracking, feedback, and intelligent alerts, making it difficult for patients and caregivers to ensure medication compliance. SmartDose is a technology-integrated pill bottle that addresses these challenges by embedding digital components directly into the bottle design. This system includes a smart cap with LED indicators and an LCD display, a digital time record showing when the last dose was taken, a textured grip for ease of handling, and alert systems that communicate with a caregiver or admin app. Together, these features ensure that medication is taken at the right time and that missed or duplicate doses are avoided. The goal is to improve patient safety, reduce health risks, and give caregivers peace of mind through a simple and effective solution.
