In 1984 is de opleiding Bestuurskunde opgericht aan de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden. Bestuurskunde is een interdisciplinaire wetenschap die zich bezighoudt met de theoretische aspecten en praktische vaardigheden van het openbaar bestuur en zijn omgeving. Op 22 mei 1985 volgt de oprichting van de Bestuurskundige Interfacultaire vereniging Leiden (B.I.L.). De vereniging telt anno 2021 ongeveer 1400 leden.
Als studievereniging vervult de B.I.L. een centrale rol in de opleiding Bestuurskunde. Zij vormt de schakel tussen de studenten en het instituut. Ook probeert zij voor de studenten de studie levendig te houden door allerlei activiteiten te organiseren die de studenten laten kennismaken met het werkveld waarin zij later terecht zullen komen. Daarnaast biedt de B.I.L. de mogelijkheid om studiegenoten beter te leren kennen en organisatorische talenten te ontwikkelen door het bezoeken van activiteiten of door het verrichten van commissie- of bestuurswerk.
