Word Up was established in 2013 by Dan Culmer (AKA DwellaPoet) after his brother entered him into a ‘poetry slam’ competition in Brighton. Dan laid down his lyrics, won the title and decided to start a spoken word event in his hometown of Tunbridge Wells. Dan has since featured several poets over the years, many now award-winning and published - including Hollie McNish and Harry Baker. He has also encouraged local poets who were initially fearful about reading their work to perform. In several cases this has resulted in publishing deals and winning prestigous poetry awards.
Together with Hannah Gee, Dan hosts Word Up on the first Wednesday of the month. For over 10 years it has been hosted by The Forum in Tunbridge Wells and it is now moving to The Old Auction House for a 6 month period.
